Velut Stella Splendida – Mechanik

Velut Stella Splendida, or Like a Bright Star as it translates, is the debut full-length album by Madrid-based Mechanik. It’s a cosmic plunge into the depths of psychedelic space rock. This Spanish quintet, formed in 2011, channels the spirit of krautrock pioneers like Can and Neu!, while infusing their sound with a modern, experimental edge. The album blends five fresh compositions with re-recorded tracks from their 2012 EPs, creating a cohesive yet adventurous 70-minute journey through sonic wormholes.
From the outset, “Wherever You Are Is The Entry Point” sets the tone with its driving, motorik beat and acidic guitar riffs, evoking a sci-fi soundtrack that’s both hypnotic and propulsive. The track’s minimalist structure builds tension, drawing listeners into Mechanik’s orbit. “In The Faith That Looks Through Death” follows, layering haunting vocals over pulsating electronics and a throbbing bassline, its rubbery groove reminiscent of early Pink Floyd with a Fripp-esque twist. The standout “Zum Traum” shifts gears, starting with quirky, Syd Barrett-inspired vocals before igniting into a relentless, guitar-driven juggernaut—a highlight of the album’s dynamic range.
Mechanik excels at balancing variety with unity. “Pills” bounces between danceable rhythms and demonic prog-psych chaos, while “Russian Doll” weaves subtle drones with acoustic flourishes, exuding a lascivious charm. The 22-minute closer, “Most People Were Silent,” opts for ambient sprawl, stripping down to essentials for a tranquil, if overly extended, farewell. While this finale might test some listeners’ patience, it underscores the band’s willingness to explore without restraint.
The production is crisp yet retains a raw, live feel, amplifying the interplay of ear-piercing guitar shrieks and low-frequency vibrations. For space rock aficionados, “Velut Stella Splendida” is a feast—its nods to krautrock tradition paired with a defiant, genre-bending spirit.
Mechanik crafts an immersive experience that rewards repeated listens, proving they’re a band unafraid to push boundaries while honoring their roots. A stellar debut for psych and krautrock devotees alike.
