This time around we feature the collection of Kyle Pierce, drummer for the band Bardus.
The first record I ever bought with my own money was…
I believe the first vinyl record I purchased with my own money was either the Jenny Piccolo/Locust split 5″ or Thriller by Michael Jackson. I could have possibly bought both the same day.
The record that made me want to make music was…
That would be the best of Black Sabbath cassette I bought from a gas station in my hometown in Central PA as a teenager. This would possibly be followed by Dillinger Escape Plan’s Under the Running Board. I didn’t quite understand that record and it made me listen to it more and more to figure out how music didn’t have to be so linear. Anything Zeppelin for Bonham. As a drummer, all I ever wanted to learn on drums was triplets thanks to him.
The record I’ve played more than any other is… Black Sabbath Vol 4. The CD version was stuck in the CD player in the van for a while. When I can’t find the perfect album to listen to, this is an easy to listen to default.
The record that always make me feel good is… Bad Reputation by Thin Lizzy. Always a good choice.
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is… Probably Townes Van Zandt self titled. That man can write some damn fine songs.
The record with my favorite cover art is… Captain Beyond self titled. It has a 3D hologram on it. Simple things man.
The strangest LP I own is… Tenkujin by Far East Family Band. They were a psych/space rock band from Japan. Its got some pretty interesting sounds/composition on it. I guess it may not even be that strange.
The rarest LP I own is… I’m not really too sure of the rarest. When I buy records, I never have the intention of buying a rare version of a release. But with that being said, I do have some limited pressed records. As The Sun Sets (pre-Daughters) Each Individual Voice on blue vinyl released on City of Hell is rarified air according to Discogs. Embarrassing story… I bought that album from Newberry Comics in Providence Place mall in Providence, Rhode Island the week it was released unbeknownst to me when I was living there with a couple friends in my early 20s. I just happened to see it and decided to buy it. The guy at the register that rung it up happened to be Lex from As The Sun Sets/Daughters who grumbled about what a waste of money that record was. I felt embarrassed and wanted to put it back. Hahaa. Glad I didn’t. A Breather Resist hand numbered out of 100 also comes to mind. That’s all I can really think of.
The last LPs I bought was… Stratavarious by Ginger Baker. It was the only “solo” record he released. Features Fela Kuti and was primarily an afrobeat record. Amazing percussion and arrangements. A few other new ones I’ve picked up across in my travels were Reflections of a Floating World by Elder, Destructoid by Grizzlor, Split by Groundhogs among a few others.
